I should probably decrease my watching, and increase my reading. I’ve got shelves of books that I have not read. Good books. Prize winning novels. I am going to catch up with those, I promise.
There is a writer however that I read every week: Roger Ebert. Don’t laugh, he is a great writer.
You might think reading a movie critic so often will just lead to more movie-watching. You’d be right. I have used Ebert’s information to discover many wonderful gems in the Netflix database. Gems from directors like Herzog, Bergman, Kurosawa, and Chow. Like other great columnists, I don’t always agree with him. Nor do I necessarily have to care a lot about the movie in order to learn a lot from his column.
A case in point is the recent review for L'Enfant. This review is packed full of great insight. We have God’s will versus free will; choosing evil, or choosing good. It is Ebert at his best. I recommend it.
